As is my normal practice, I stay as far away from malls as possible on the Friday following Thanksgiving, and I think the area South of Wakefield qualifies.
I originally was only stopping by here to add Airfield Pond to the launch site list, and I was going to paddle the Nottoway River. After I got a look of the area, I decided to paddle here, and possible do a little bit on the Nottoway. My choice was rewarded with a very nice leisurely paddle.
The entire pond is surrounded by a hardwood marsh, with very obvious beaver activity.
I would have like to paddle a little more into the trees, but the depth was not making that easy, and where the water was likely deep enough, was occupied by people fishing.
As I was rounding the 4H camp to the Northern extent of the pond a large bird flew over, and I immediately recognized it as an Bald Eagle. I saw the eagle land in a tree about a hundred yards away. This eagle was a lot more skittish then the others I have run across, and flew off before I could get close enough to get some good pictures
